One of a kind, earthenware works by South Carolina artist Penny Pierson- Burke.
2016 is here and apparently I'm not!!!! I have been working on my new pieces for this year and kinda got hemmed up with planning my launch and how to build an audience. This is all great and wonderful unless you are sliding on actually making pottery!!!! So today I will be shooting pics and getting them out there for all to see.......I hope there is an all out there some where!!!! If you love my work please tell your friends to like me on FB, it can be so lonely out here in the art world. facebook.pennypottery
Isn't that what you are suppose to ask Monday morning after the bowl game? I, myself have no clue. I mean I did go to a Super bowl party, truth be told I go to socialize and maybe to catch a few minutes here and there so people know I actually did see the game. But, I take this opportunity to see friends and get out of my pottery studio so people know I am still alive or maybe like the groundhog, see if I cast a shadow to determine whether Spring is on its way sooner than later.
I don't know about other artists but full contact sports really don't do it for me, BUT if two grown guys want to play in the mud (pottery mud) while I keep score, that's a whole nother game plan!!!!! (yes, nother is a real word)
So am off to make pottery and dream about hot, shirtless men playing in the mud. Wow, its great to be an artist!!!!!!
Motivation is something everyone talks about! If you are self employed, an artist or just getting to work every day requires motivation. I myself am a very motivated person, my problem is staying focused in one direction....kinda like this blog. I really intend to stay on track and put one entry per day or at least one per week BUT..... have you ever heard of Pinterest????? If not you are really living under a rock. Pinterest is the black hole of motivation and focus, dont get me wrong Pinterest is great for inspiration but it will suck you in and spit you out 4 or 5 hours later, seriously.
So my plan is to stay focused, save Pinterest for evening hours and of course stay motivated. To all of you Pinterest-o-holics out there.......just say NO! Smile-
Back in the swing of things. After 10 months of working and filling pottery orders I am back to just making pottery. I am determined to make this year a pottery profitable year. I hope you will come with!
Well here I am......It is almost May and I have just found the time to sit and catch my breath. Since my last post I have gone back to work, not my first choice in things to do but, pottery orders came in fast and slowed down even faster yet the bills did not change in any way.
Working full time and a beautiful Spring is killing my progress in the studio, it is raining today so I am sitting still enough to do this, work on my site, glaze a bit and vacuum the house and be to work by 12:30.
I cant wait to get back into the studio full time, hoping this will happen before the years is out, keep your fingers crossed.............................
Busy, Busy, Busy..... well the year is kicking off with a bang and I am potting away. 15 hours Wednesday and 12 yesterday!! Finally seeing the pots of my labor. It has been bitter cold here and heating the studio has been nearly impossible. Working with wet clay and water in the cold is less than fun so I have moved my work space into the house. Kinda nice working in the luxury of satellite TV and a bathroom! Ok off to glazed.......
As you can probably tell I am less than a month in to keeping my blog and already I am back sliding!! Here is my excuse: I am pleasantly surprised that the wholesale season has kicked off 3 months early this year, which is a great thing!!!! BUT, my personality lives in a panic mode so I registered for a huge show in March (Flowertown Festival come see me) two sessions at the farmers market, a tour of homes and a school demo., all of this before the end of May. I made these decisions based on last years trend..........caution DONT ever take last year seriously. I made sure I had a sufficient number of things scheduled to keep some mode of cash coming in while waiting for the wholesale season to get rolling. Now, I am seriously in panic mode, not just the made up kind. Off to play in the mud..................................................
Today is the day to feed the kiln gods.... These sake cups are almost ready to go. Every time the kiln is loaded it is like Christmas, the process of glazing is the same, but for some reason you are always surprised (some times good, some times not) by what comes out.
For any potter or artist really, there is a part of every creative process that keeps you intrigued and keeps you creating, for me, this is one of those processes. The other process for me is the unlimited amount of stuff you can create with clay. Seriously, I will have to be reincarnated as a potter more times than I can count to make all of the things I have in my head!!!! I will tell anyone; if you dont have a hobby or passion in your life you are missing out. Go now and find a hobby, you willlllll be so much more full filled in your life AND you make some really passionate friends and really cool acquaintances.
Took a road trip with my buddy in training, Junior. Junior is a rescued Lab mix ( I think) with serious social anxiety.. .kinda like his owner. We headed to Asheville to hike and enjoy the day, what the hell was I thinking?? I was fooled by the 52' here, arrived on NC and it was 38', windy and snowing!! We stopped at Chimney Rock and Junior went swimming in the river, brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!! See its a Lab thing.
Visited cool shops in Black Mountain, talked with shop keeps allowing myself to become every shops worst nightmare by putting a plug in for my work when ever possible, although Juniors blue eyes softened the blow.
Anyhow, the trip cleared my head, maybe the wind blew out the dead ideas and allowed room for new ones, we may never know.
Came home totally inspired, I worked late that night and all day yesterday. Today will be the same, I hope this continues at least until Spring so I can actually go hiking!
